WEEDS AND MORE WEEDS AND MORE.................

07-03-17: Long Beach Peninsula was blessed (maybe not) with an abundance of rain this past winter. The result, PROLIFIC WEEDS!
In the past 6 years, members have worked to keep weeds on their lots under control. Many members used the services of Earl Miller to help them out. Unfortunately, Earl has retired from his job, so now what? The job falls back on the shoulders of the members. Our rules state that are sites are to be mowed and cleaned up by Memorial Day weekend and maintained throughout the season.
Many members had their lots cleaned by Memorial Day but the abundance of rain has once again urged the many seeds to sprout and grow their way up seeking the sun. So, what are we to do? Earl has offered some advice for weed control and maintaining a somewhat weed free lot.
1. Use Casaron or Preen in the early spring. Both these products prevent seeds from germinating. Casaron is said to work for 12 months. Preen claims to work for 3 or 4 months. You will find you have to use these products more than once during the year.
2. You can try a homemade application of Dawn dishwashing soap, Epson salts and vinegar. Recipes for this can be found online. The mixture must be sprayed on the weeds. This mixture is not a one time application. It needs to be reapplied quite frequently. So, if you are not at the park on a regular basis, this mixture will not be very successful for you.
3. You can always go back to the old fashioned methods of weed control? You can pull the weeds, hoe them, or take black plastic and cover the weeded area for 2 or 3 days to prevent the weeds from growing. If you use the tarp, you will need to make sure it is anchored well to prevent the plastic from blowing away. Don't go away and leave the plastic.
4. Use herbicides such as Round Up, Ground Clear, Cornerstone Plus or other herbicides that are available. IMPORTANT: Read and follow the instructions on these herbicides. do not use them on a windy day. Be sure you mix them appropriately.
