RUSTY PROPANE TANKS
|
10-18-18: Rust is a never-ending problem when you have a place at the beach. It becomes a dangerous situation when the rust eats its way thru the propane tank and causes a leak. This happened here in the park the other day. Luckily, the smell of propane was detected by a group of our daily walkers and was tracked down.
The tank involved was in very poor condition and had rusted thru near the bottom. The member was unaware of the issue and had not seen to the care of the tank. The member called Active Enterprises who came and took the tank away.
So, what can we do to prevent this? Every year, all members should inspect their propane tank. If you have a rental tank, and your tank is looking rusty, contact Active Enterprises and strongly encourage them to come take care of the rust on your tank. If you own your tank, remove the loose rust with a wire brush, prime the area with a rust inhibitive. (These products can be purchased at Oman's or Dennis. One is Loctite Extend Rust Neutralizer.) After this has dried, you can apply rust inhibiting paint such as Rustoleum.
By doing this simple annual maintenance, members will extend the life of their propane tank and most important, keep themselves and their neighbors afe.
